NICI Quick Take
Gingko Bioworks was started by a team of MIT scientists in 2009. The company builds made-to-order microbes and organisms for its clients. It uses biology to build sustainable products in food, pharma, manufacturing, and cannabis. It has partnered with the Cronos Group to develop synthetic cannabinoids by genetically engineering strains of yeast that can produce rare cannabinoids that could not be extracted otherwise.
